Meet the New Ones

The barnyard and the frontier. Sunrise Rooster and Daybreak Hen are a pair, and they look best that way — one at each end of a run, like they're keeping an eye on things. Frontier Bison is our quietest new icon and probably our most serious. Desert Saguaro came out of the Southwest side of Americana, all open sky and long road.

Summer, and the ballpark. Midsummer Soft Serve is a cone with the swirl on top, which is a genuinely difficult thing to paint by hand and our artists nailed it. Ball Park Hot Dog pairs with Batter Up and Play Ball from the original run. League Night is a rack of bowling pins, and it is going straight into somebody's basement bar.

Wildflowers. Wild Coreopsis, Blanket Flower Blossom, and Little Flower are the ones to reach for when you want the collection to read soft rather than storybook. Scattered sparsely through a field of ivory, they behave almost like a botanical print.

And two that didn't fit anywhere else. Moto Jacket — leather, collar up, no explanation needed. And Cottage Picket, a short run of picket fence that works beautifully as a repeat if you order a few and set them side by side.

How Designers Are Actually Using Them

The most common approach is also the best one: order a field of our Meadow Corner Field tile and scatter icons through it. Five or six across a backsplash. Not a grid, not a pattern — just placed the way things collect on a shelf over time.

Meadow Corner Field has small cobalt corner florets that meet at the intersections, so the whole surface has a gentle repeating detail even where there's no icon. It keeps the ivory from going flat.

The other approach we love is the single icon. One tile, painted for one person, set into an otherwise plain backsplash where only they know why it's there.

About the Custom Thing

This is the part people don't realize we mean literally.

If you want your dog on a tile, we will paint your dog. Not a generic dog. Your dog, with the ear that folds wrong.

Your first car. Your grandmother's dahlias. The boat. The cabin. The logo of the bar you met in. A designer recently asked us for a custom icon set of her children's hands, and we painted it.

Custom icons run a 30% markup over the standard icon price, plus an artwork fee that depends on how complex the drawing is — sometimes that fee is very small. Send us a photo or a sketch and we'll tell you honestly what it takes.

The Details

  • Cobalt oxide, hand-painted on ivory ceramic, in the Delft tradition
  • Available in 4×4 and 6×6
  • No minimums — order a single icon if a single icon is what you need
  • Painted to order in our Nashville studio
  • Custom icons always welcome

Because every icon is painted with a brush rather than printed, no two are identical. Brushwork runs a little lighter here, a little deeper there. Linework shifts by a hair. That variation is not a flaw to be tolerated — it's the evidence that a person made it.

Which is the whole reason we do this. The tile remembers who made it.
